The REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards.
The purposes covered by the Act are:
- Accessing Federal Facilities
- Entering Nuclear Power Plants
- Boarding Federally Regulated Commercial Aircraft
Deadline for Compliance: October 1, 2021
Due to the disruption caused by COVID-19, the deadline has been extended by one year. We’ll update you should that information change again.
Be sure that your driver’s license complies with your state standards well before your date of travel. Even if you’re not planning a vacation soon, you’ll still need it for any unplanned or emergency travel. No exceptions will be made, so if you have friends and family out of state, this is something you want to pay very close attention to!
